Kenyans abroad sent home a record Sh931.8 billion in remittances in the year ending May 2025, underscoring the growing role of diaspora funds in sustaining households and fueling investments.
The bulk of inflows, Sh848.4 billion, came through cash transfers, while Sh83.5 billion was channeled via digital platforms, highlighting the shift toward faster, flexible modes of sending money compared to in‑kind goods that carry higher costs and logistical hurdles.
Education emerged as the strongest beneficiary, with recipients holding university qualifications receiving Sh286.7 billion, the largest share at 30.8 percent.
Those with secondary education followed closely at Sh268.8 billion. In contrast, households without formal schooling accounted for just Sh68.6 billion, reflecting 7.4 percent of total inflows.
The figures reveal how diaspora remittances are not only cushioning families through consumption, healthcare, and school fees, but also shaping investment decisions, with education standing out as a key driver of financial support.
