Simba Sports Club, commonly referred to as

Simba SC, is a prominent professional football club based in Kariakoo ward, Ilala District of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The club has a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1936. Initially established as Eagles, the club underwent several name changes before adopting its current name, Simba, which translates to “Lion” in Swahili, in 1971.
Founding and Early Years (1936-1970)
The origins of Simba SC can be traced back to the establishment of Eagles in 1936. This period was characterized by the nascent development of football in Tanzania, which was then under colonial rule. The club’s early years were marked by local competitions and community engagement. In the late 1960s, the club was renamed Sunderland before finally becoming Simba SC in 1971. This rebranding coincided with a growing national identity and pride associated with African independence movements.
Rise to Prominence (1970s-1990s)
Throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s, Simba SC began to establish itself as one of Tanzania’s leading football clubs. The team gained popularity due to its competitive spirit and success on the field. By winning multiple domestic titles during this era, including league championships and cup competitions, Simba solidified its reputation among Tanzanian football fans.
In 1993, Simba SC achieved significant continental recognition by reaching the final of the CAF Cup (now known as the CAF Confederation Cup). This marked a high point for Tanzanian football on the international stage and showcased Simba’s potential beyond local competitions.
Recent Developments (2000-Present)
Entering the new millennium, Simba SC continued to build on its legacy. The club has won numerous league titles—22 Tanzanian Premier League titles as of now—making it one of the most successful teams in Tanzania alongside its fierce rivals Young Africans S.C., commonly known as Yanga. The rivalry between these two clubs is intense and is famously known as the Kariakoo derby.
Simba SC has also participated multiple times in various CAF tournaments such as the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup. Their best performance in these continental competitions has been reaching the quarter-finals.
In terms of financial strength, Simba SC is recognized as one of East Africa’s richest clubs. For instance, their budget for the 2019/2020 season was reported at TSh 6.1 billion (approximately $5.3 million), indicating robust financial management that supports player acquisitions and infrastructure development.
Club Identity and Fanbase
The nickname “Wekundu wa Msimbazi,” meaning “The Reds of Msimbazi,” reflects both their iconic red home strip and their roots in Kariakoo where their headquarters are located. The fanbase is notably large and passionate; they are considered one of Tanzania’s largest football communities alongside Yanga supporters.
Simba SC plays its home matches at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium located in Miburani ward of Temeke District, which further enhances their visibility and support within Dar es Salaam.
Overall, Simba Sports Club stands out not only for its historical achievements but also for its ongoing contributions to Tanzanian football culture and community engagement.
